  • Mrs. Avelina Damonte

12th. grade and BRACE Advisor M.S. Adult Education and T

Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year! This is the 12th. grade counseling and BRACE Advising. My name is Mrs. Damonte and I started last year at AGA teaching 6th. grade US History. This year, Dr. Williams retired and Dr. Valdes offered me the position which I accepted and started on September 13h. I earned my Master in Adult Education and Training with a Concentration in Technology and Virtual Education from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelors in Social Studies Education 6-12 with a minor in History from Florida Atlantic University. I have been an educator for the past fifteen years teaching always in the Charter School System where both of my children and many of my most dear students graduated and went on to UF, UCF, Texas A&M, FIU, and Broward College. I believe in developing the love for learning in all students and I give them one hundred percent. I have been a school counselor and an ESOL coordinator for the past five years and those are the roles that I like the most. I believe counselors and advisors can develop a different type of relationship with the students and can influence and help them at another level. The pressure of the grades is no longer present and therefore advisors and students can focus more on the whole student and their development. I am a firm believer that education after high school becomes a necessity in our fast-changing and the more connected global world but that does not mean necessarily a traditional college or career but what suits the abilities and the likes of the students. Working with students, assessing their personalities, their abilities, and their inclinations for different subjects is what makes the office of the BRACE advisor at Avant-Garde extremely important. I can be reached at adamonte@agabroward.org, by phone at extension 108, or using the Remind app for faster text messages. Please allow 24-48 hours and do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you might have about your student. I am looking forward to meeting all of you in person as soon as possible and having Zoom meetings especially during those weeks that I am testing and don't have enough time to see students or parents in person in my office. I will be posting the instructions, schedules, and links. Thank you for placing your trust in me with your student. I can't promise that I won't make mistakes or that we might agree to disagree at some point but I can promise that I would do always my best with your student's best interest at heart that we will all treat each other and our school property with respect and care, that I will catch the student...so they will not fall, that if and when they are down I will uplift them and empower them to do their best, That I will be with them every step of the way...so they won't feel alone, I will guide in their educational endeavors... so they can lead their own path and future. I will help them to succeed with all the weapons I have at my disposal.

Ms. Espilla was born in Florida, but since her family was from The Basque Country (Spain) she has lived and raised there with them. However, she always had a special connection with her birthplace, which made her come almost every year to visit. In order to achieve that, she did her 9th grade in West Palm Beach and a lot of Comunity Service volunteers in some schools. Apart from that, she has worked in Summer Camps and an Academy for years, where she gained a lot of experience with the kids. After years, she graduated in Spain with a Bachelor in Elementary Education with a Specialization in Therapeutic Pedagogy. All that helped her to learn that people need to work as a team. It is very important to her to be the best role model and lead kids or people around to the right path. But, she also thinks that being a leader embodies working with others as well, which is very relevant taking into account everyone's opinion. That way, she believes that the best way to maintain a positive, organized, outgoing, confident, and compassionate atmosphere in the class is by working with others and figuring out how we can do something in the best way!

Her goal for her students is to create a challenging and engaging classroom environment and support their development into lifelong learners. Her educational philosophy is the belief that empowering students to become masters of their own learning involves the acquisition of knowledge through a love for learning, and students who possess a love of learning are motivated to achieve and will accept responsibility for their own learning. Mrs. LaVette believes the long overused adage that knowledge is power is clearly wrong, and knowing more does not make you any more able. What is required is an understanding that one can only become better and wiser when knowledge is applied; otherwise, it is like having your car tank full of gas and leaving it parked. Mrs. LaVette agrees with the words of Michel de Montaigne, who said that “we ought to find out not who understands most but who understands best.” She believes that it is not enough to feed our kids with knowledge; they need to be active participants when chewing, swallowing and digesting this knowledge. They need to be cognizant of the entire process from the acquisition to the utilization of knowledge to the appreciation of its value and benefits to the mind. Only with this understanding will education be the most important factor in the empowerment of the student and the improvement of society.

  • Mr. Brad Maggart

    Visual Art Teacher K‑5

Mr. Maggart, our elementary art teacher, comes to Avant Garde with the goal of elevating the visual art program to the highest levels of student pride and captivated engagement. Brad studied art education at the well-known Parsons School of Design in New York. Before this life changing professional decision to choose a teaching career in art education, Brad was an accomplished practicing designer on both coasts in two sought-after fields. He worked as a motion graphics designer for film in Hollywood, California and as a packaging designer for fashion and fragrance in New York. Avant Garde is not Brad’s first time teaching at a charter school. Brad was part of the original staff at The Bronx Charter School For Children where he served as their elementary art teacher. After leaving New York, Brad taught abroad in Saint Petersburg, Russia, teaching art to teens and young children as well as teaching ESL to adults. Brad loved living and working in the great arts capital that Saint Petersburg has always been. After seven friendly years in Eastern Europe it was back to the States. Proudly this move wasn’t Brad’s alone; it came with a family of four. Portland, Oregon was the destination. Brad taught K-5 art in the public school system there before joining us at Avant Garde. Brad is currently enrolled in FSU's masters in art education program. Mr. Maggart would say the most important thing is that the child is the artist, as real of an artist as any professional whose work is coveted by museums worldwide. With that respect for the child-as-artist capabilities, Brad dedicates his approach to asking “What does a real artist do?” He guides his teaching to facilitate those artist behaviors. Brad goes so far as to put his room into action as a makers’ studio, modeled after real-world artists’ studios filled with creatives of wonderfully-varied expertise. Brad’s favorite book is Engaging Learners Through Art Making: Choice-Based Art Education in the Classroom by Katherine M. Douglas and Diane B. Jaquith

Her main goal is to help the students who are not speakers of the English language and, due to this fact, have difficulties in this language and other subjects acquisition during their learning process in the school. She also expects to ease the mutual communication of the students and their parents with the teachers, administration, and the rest of the staff. She wishes good academic results and the best future for all the students who come to AGA to face the tough but worth winning battle for high-quality knowledge, which implies their total devotion to their studies and the greatest respect for their teachers and all the AGA staff.
